Power Rating Calculator

Safety first. Ensure your resistors can handle the heat by calculating the required wattage for your circuit.

The 2x Safety Rule

Always choose a resistor with a power rating at least twice the calculated dissipation. This prevents the resistor from becoming dangerously hot.

Calculated Dissipation

0.000W

Recommended Rating

1/4 W (0.25W)

Standard Wattages

1/8 W0.125 W
1/4 W0.250 W
1/2 W0.500 W
1 W1.000 W
2 W2.000 W

Understanding Power Dissipation

Why does it matter?

Resistors convert energy into heat. If forced to dissipate more than designed for, they fail, potentially damaging other components or causing hazards.

SMD Components

Surface-mount resistors often have much lower ratings. A standard 0603 resistor might only handle 0.1W. Always check the datasheet.

Heat Management

In high-power applications, multiple resistors in parallel can distribute heat over a larger surface area, reducing local temperatures.
